21.42

新羅龜山和尚有舉。相國裴公休啟建法會問看經僧。是什麼經。僧曰。無言童子經。公曰。有幾卷。僧曰。兩卷。公曰。既是無言為什麼却有兩卷。僧無對。師代曰。若論無言非唯兩卷。

Upādhyāya Guishan of Silla brought up [a story]: Prime Minister Lord Pei Xiu, when convening a Dharma assembly, asked a monk reading a sūtra, "What sūtra is that?" The monk said, "The *Sūtra of the Wordless Youth*." The lord said, "How many fascicles are there?" The monk said, "Two fascicles." The lord said, "Since it is wordless, why are there two fascicles?" The monk had no reply. The master spoke in his place: "If one discusses wordlessness, it is not merely two fascicles."
