Master Ziyi Xinyin Shuiyue of Mount Tianzhu in Hangzhou was a native of Leqing County in Wenzhou. His family name was Chen. When he first set out on his travels, he visited Gushan. He then asked, “Ziyi has journeyed from three thousand li away to come to your Dharma assembly. Today, coming up outside the proper time, I beg the master to answer out of time.” Gushan said, “I cannot slight you, benevolent one.” The master said, “What is it like at the place where effort is saved?” Gushan said, “Why do you waste effort?” From this the master grasped the meaning upon these words. He then went to the Zhejiang region. King Qian Zhongyi heard of his reputation in the Way and commanded him to open the Dharma at the two bodhimaṇḍas of Luohan and Guangfu. The sea of monks gathered there. The master ascended the hall and instructed the assembly, saying, “The great assembly has been standing for a long time. What more are you waiting for? I would not begrudge elaborating, yet I fear misleading you venerable monks, so that you would be further confused about your way home. Take care in this cold season.” A monk asked, “What is the matter that has come down from of old?” The master said, “Stop.” The monk asked, “How can one comprehend it?” The master said, “What a pity that a dragon's head turns into a snake's tail.” A monk bowed, stood up, and was about to ask a question. The master said, “Set aside your ‘how is it’ for now.” The monk then asked, “What about a son who begins his labor—does he still have an affinity with it or not?” The master said, “Only waiting for the game to end, he does not notice that his axe-handle has rotted away.” A monk asked, “What is Vimalakīrti’s silence?” The master said, “Slander.” The monk asked, “Why did Mañjuśrī praise it?” The master said, “Guilty of the same crime.” The monk asked, “What about Vimalakīrti then?” The master said, “A three-foot scarf on his head, a single whisk in his hand.” A monk asked, “Where do all Buddhas appear in the world?” The master said, “A tiny spark of fire in the vast ocean.” The monk said, “The student does not understand.” The master said, “It burns up all the fish and dragons.” A monk asked, “What was the intention behind Danxia burning the wooden Buddha?” The master said, “When it is cold, gather around the stove facing the roaring fire.” The monk asked, “Was there any fault in it or not?” The master said, “When it is hot, sit by the bamboo grove along the stream.” A monk asked, “What is the essential doctrine of the Dharma realm?” The master said, “The tidal bore of the Zhejiang River on the ninth day of the ninth month.” A monk asked, “I do not ask about the rest; who is the person under the gate of Guangfu who transcends Vairocana and surpasses Śākyamuni?” The master said, “I present you with the rest.” The monk said, “In that case, it is the greatest joy of my life.” The master said, “What kind of joyful affair is it?” The monk was at a loss. The master shouted at him. When the master was about to step down from the hall, a monk asked, “I beg the master to hand down a single phrase on stepping down from the hall.” The master said, “Carrying a sandal, he has already returned to the Western country; / In this mountain, only an old ape cries in vain.” A monk asked, “At Gushan there was talk of ‘tearing down the drum and capturing the banner’; what about you, Master?” The master said, “I cannot bear to execute a defeated general.” The monk asked, “What if you encounter an able general?” The master said, “Pitying your lonely soul, I offer you three libations.” A monk asked, “When the World-Honoured One entered extinction, where did he return to?” The master said, “In the Śāla Grove, the color changed in vain; the true return is a return to nowhere.” The monk asked, “Where did Confucius certainly go?” The master said, “The scarlet fruits fall in the violent wind; the luxuriant blossoms drop in the clear autumn.” The monk asked, “Where will our master return in the future?” The master said, “If you now wish to know where I shall return: / In east, west, south, and north, willows have turned to silk.” A monk asked, “How can one practice so as to accord with the Way?” The master said, “Roll high the bamboo blind while chanting poetry; brew strong tea after waking from sleep.” The master returned to his native place. In the third year of the Yongxi era, he manifested extinction. His disciples cremated him, collected his relics, and built a stupa.
