Chan Master Baiyun Zhizuo Zhenji of Jianzhou was a native of Yongzhen. His family name was Zhu. His countenance resembled that of an Indian monk. He paid homage to the National Master of Gushan, shaved his head, and received full ordination at the age of twenty-four. One day, Gushan ascended the hall and called to the assembly. All turned their eyes to him. Gushan opened his robe to show them. The assembly was at a loss. Only the master clearly realized the intention, entered the room, and had it confirmed. Furthermore, once during his interview, Gushan summoned him to come closer and asked, “What was Nanquan's intention in calling the monastery director?” The master merely folded his hands, composed his countenance, and stepped back to stand. Gushan smiled and thought him remarkable. Thereafter, he traveled through Wu and Chu, then returned to Minchuan. First he resided at Nanfeng, and later at Baiyun Cloister in Jianzhou. The master ascended the hall and said, “Is there anyone who can pose a question within the ancestral vehicle? Wait for this mountain monk to reply within the ancestral vehicle.” At that time a monk bowed, and just as he stood up, the master returned to the abbot’s quarters. A monk asked, “What is the dragon's roar within the withered tree?” The master said, “A lotus growing amidst the fire.” The monk asked, “What is the eye in the skull?” The master said, “A mud ox entering the water.” A monk asked, “Who is the master within the master?” The master said, “Do you possess eyes?” The monk said, “If so, the student will return to the hall.” The master said, “A monkey entering a cloth bag.” A monk asked, “What is the ford of Yanping?” The master said, “Through countless ages, the water flows abundantly.” The monk asked, “What is the sword of Yanping?” The master said, “Quickly take a step back.” The monk asked, “I do not know whether the ford and the sword are the same or different.” The master said, “What a pity for this fellow!” In the second year of the Qianyou era (yiyou), the ruler of Jiangnan, of the Li clan, invited him to reside at Fengxian and bestowed upon him a purple robe and a master's title. Ascending the hall and taking the seat, the assembly listened intently. The master said, “I am deceiving you; do you still understand? Have you not heard how many monks were on Vulture Peak of old? It was merely said that Kāśyapa personally heard it. Today, I humbly receive the imperial decree to propagate the ancestral teaching; it cannot be different from Vulture Peak. Since it is no different from Vulture Peak, how do you benevolent ones understand each other? Do not adhere rigidly to past and present; just put forth a bit of spirit among yourselves, and let all examine what it is.” A monk asked, “The assembly on Vulture Peak is no different from right now. I wonder what the matter of personal hearing was like?” The master said, “Bring it up again.” The monk said, “If so, then humans and devas have someone to rely on.” The master said, “What about you, Ācārya?” A monk asked, “The wise prince requests your presence to broadly unfold the Dharma banquet. How do you indicate the ancestor’s coming from the West?” The master said, “Remember it clearly.” The monk said, “In the end, I dare not fail you, Upādhyāya.” The master said, “Not yet.” A monk asked, “What is the realm of Fengxian?” The master said, “Look at it as you will.” The monk asked, “Who is the person within the realm?” The master said, “Do not be rude.” A monk asked, “What is the house style of Fengxian?” The master said, “Where is it right now?” The monk said, “If so, then the great assembly has someone to rely on.” The master said, “What does that have to do with you?” A monk asked, “What is a phrase that guides people?” The master said, “If it were not Fengxian, it could not be spoken.”
