22.8

衢州鎮境遇緣禪師。僧問。眾手淘金誰是得者。師曰。谿畔披砂徒自困。家中有寶速須還。僧曰。恁麼即始終不從人得去也。師曰。饒君便有擎山力。未免肩頭有擔胝。

Chan Master Yuyuan of Zhenjing in Quzhou. A monk asked, "When many hands pan for gold, who is the one who gets it?" The Master said, "Sifting sand by the stream, one merely exhausts oneself; there is a jewel in your own house, you must return at once." The monk said, "If so, then from first to last it is not obtained from others." The Master said, "Even if you possess the strength to lift a mountain, you cannot avoid calluses on your shoulder from carrying the load."
