Chan Master Xingyin of Foshou Cliff on Mount Lu was a native of Yanmen. His surname is unknown. In his early years he studied Confucianism. One day he cast off the mundane world to leave home, intent on seeking the ultimate truth, and then went wandering on pilgrimage. First he called upon Chan Master Zhen of Mount Lumen in Xiangyang. Master and disciple chimed in accord on the Way. Soon he reached the Jianghuai region and climbed Mount Lu. North of the mountain there was a cliff shaped like five fingers, and below it was a stone cavern over thirty feet deep. The master rested in its midst. Hence he was called Upādhyāya Foshouyan ('Buddha-Hand Cliff'). He did not ordain disciples. A monk from a neighbouring hermitage provided for and attended him. Unusual deer and brocade-pouched birds would often circle tamely at his side. Lord Li, ruler of Jiangnan, admired him from afar and sent envoys three times to summon him, but he would not rise. [The ruler] earnestly requested that he open the Dharma at Qixian Temple; before a month had passed, he secretly returned to his cliff cavern. A monk asked, 'What is the manifest physical body?' The master held up one finger. (Fayan said alternatively, 'Is there still one or not?') One day he showed signs of a slight illness. He said to his attendant monk, 'When the sun nears noon, I shall depart.' The attendant monk was just replying when the master stepped down from his bed, walked a few paces, stood upright, and passed away. On the cliff-top a pine tree withered and died on the same day. He was over seventy years of age. The sovereign ordered court painters to depict his portrait, provided fragrant firewood to cremate him, and collected his relic bones to enshrine in a pagoda on the north side of the cliff.
