23.108

雪後始諳松桂別　雲收方見濟河分
不因世主教還俗　那辨雞群與鶴群
多年塵事謾騰騰　雖著方袍未是僧
今日修行依善慧　滿頭留髮候然燈
形容雖變道常存　混俗心源亦不昏
更讀善財巡禮偈　當時何處作沙門

'Only after snow does one distinguish pine from cassia; / Only when clouds clear does one see the divide of the Ji River. / Were it not for the ruler's decree to return to lay life, / How could one tell the flock of cranes from the flock of chickens?

For many years entangled in dusty affairs, vainly drifting along; / Though wearing square robes, one was not yet a monk. / Today's practice relies on Shanhui; / With a full head of hair, I await Dīpaṃkara.

Though my appearance has changed, the Way constantly abides; / Mingling with the mundane, the source of the mind is not dimmed. / Re-reading Sudhana's verses of pilgrimage, / Where at that time did he become a śramaṇa?'
