From the time he first paid homage [to his master] until his return to the origin and manifestation of decease, the master never went down the mountain. He was buried two hundred paces east of Upādhyāya Wuliao's pagoda, designated the East Pagoda. After several years, the pagoda suddenly split open along the stairs for more than ten feet. At the time, the monk in charge of the pagoda was about to open it. While resting in silence at night, he saw the samādhi-body of the West Pagoda, which said, 'My remains have already troubled you to rebury; now for the East Pagoda, do not bother to bring them out again.' The master of the pagoda, receiving this spiritual response, summoned donors to repair and adorn it; to this day, incense and lamps have not ceased. People at the time called them the two true bodies of Chen and Shen. The deeds of Chan Master Wuliao, heir to Mazu, are extensive as related in a separate chapter.
