西川靈龕和尚。僧問。如何是諸佛出身處。師曰。出處非干佛春來草自青。問碌碌地時如何。師曰。試進一步看。

Upādhyāya Lingkan of Xichuan. A monk asked, 'What is the place of origin of all Buddhas?' The master said, 'The place of origin has nothing to do with Buddhas; when spring comes, the grass turns green on its own.' [The monk] asked, 'How is it when one is ordinary and mediocre?' The master said, 'Try stepping forward a pace and see.'
