益州淨眾寺歸信禪師。僧問。蓮華未出水時如何。師曰。菡萏滿池流。曰出水後如何。師曰。葉落不知秋。問不假浮囊便登巨海時如何。師曰。紅嘴飛超三界外。綠毛也解道煎茶。

Chan Master Guixin of Jingzhong Temple in Yizhou. A monk asked, "How is it before the lotus blossoms emerge from the water?" The master said, "Lotus buds drift all over the pond." [The monk] said, "How about after they emerge from the water?" The master said, "Leaves fall without knowing autumn." [The monk] asked, "How is it when one embarks upon the great sea without relying on a floating bag?" The master said, "With a red beak it flies transcendent beyond the three realms; with green feathers it also knows how to boil tea."
