幽州傳法和尚。僧問。教意與祖意是同是別。師曰。華開金線秀古洞白雲深。問別人為什麼徒弟多。師為什麼無徒弟。師曰。海島龍多隱茆茨鳳不棲。

Upādhyāya Chuanfa of Youzhou. A monk asked, "Are the teachings' intent and the patriarchs' intent identical or distinct?" The master said, "Blossoms bloom elegant with golden threads; the ancient cave is deep with white clouds." [The monk] asked, "Why is it that other people have many disciples, while you, Master, have no disciples?" The master said, "In ocean islands many dragons conceal themselves; upon thatched eaves no phoenix perches."
