23.15

蘄州北禪寂和尚悟通大師。師問僧。什麼處來。曰黃州來。師曰。在什麼院。曰資福。師曰。福將何資。曰兩重公案師曰爭奈在北禪手裏何。曰在手裏即收取。師便打。

Upādhyāya Ji of Beichan in Qizhou, Great Master Wutong. The master asked a monk, “Where did you come from?”
[The monk] said, “I came from Huangzhou.”
The master said, “At what cloister were you?”
[The monk] said, “Zifu.”
The master said, “With what do you provide blessings (zifu)?”
[The monk] said, “A double gong’an.”
The master said, “What can be done about it being in Beichan’s hands?”
[The monk] said, “Since it is in your hands, take it back.”
The master then struck him.
