23.20

金陵清涼明禪師。江南國主請師上堂。小長老問。凡有言句盡落方便。不落方便請師速道。師曰。國主在此不敢無禮。

Chan Master Ming of Qingliang in Jinling. The ruler of the Southern Jiangnan state invited the master to ascend the hall. The junior elder asked, “All spoken phrases fall completely into skillful means. Not falling into skillful means—please speak quickly, master!”
The master said, “The ruler of the state is present here; I dare not be impolite.”
