23.21

金陵奉先深禪師。江南國主請開堂日才升座。維那白槌曰。法筵龍象眾當觀第一義。師便云。果然不識鈍置殺人。時有僧出禮拜問。如何是第一義。師曰。賴遇道了也。曰如何領會。師曰。速禮三拜。師又拈曰。大眾汝道。鈍置落阿誰分上。

Chan Master Shen of Fengxian in Jinling. On the day the ruler of the Southern Jiangnan state invited him to open the hall, he had just ascended the seat when the karmadāna struck the gavel and said, “Dragons and elephants at the Dharma assembly, behold the primary meaning!”
The master then said, “Truly not recognizing it, mortifying people to death!”
At that time, a monk came forward, bowed, and asked, “What is the primary meaning?”
The master said, “Fortunately it was already spoken.”
[The monk] said, “How should one comprehend it?”
The master said, “Quickly make three bows.”
The master also brought it up, saying, “Great assembly, you tell me: upon whose lot does the mortification fall?”
