23.42

懷州玄泉第二世和尚。僧問。辭窮理盡時如何。師曰。不入理豈同盡。問妙有玄珠如何取得。師曰。不似摩尼絕影豔。碧眼胡人豈能見。曰有口道不得時如何。師曰。三寸不能齊鼓韻。啞人解唱木人歌。

The second-generation Upādhyāya of Xuanquan in Huaizhou. A monk asked, 'How is it when words are exhausted and principles are finished?' The master said, 'If one does not enter into principle, how can it end together?' He asked, 'The wondrously existent dark jewel—how is it obtained?' The master said, 'It is not like a maṇi jewel that lacks shadow and luster; how could a blue-eyed barbarian see it?' He said, 'How is it when one has a mouth but cannot speak?' The master said, 'Three inches [of tongue] cannot match the rhythm of the drum; a mute person understands how to sing the wooden man's song.'
