23.56

建州白雲令弇和尚。師上堂謂眾曰。遣往先生門誰云對喪主珍重。僧問。己事未明以何為驗。師曰。木鏡照素容。曰驗後如何。師曰。不爭多。問三台有請四眾臨筵。既處當仁請師一唱。師曰。要唱即不難。曰便請師唱。師曰。夜靜水清魚不食滿船空載月明歸。

Upādhyāya Lingyan of Baiyun in Jianzhou ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying, "Dispensing with going to the master's gate, who speaks of facing the host of mourning? Take care!" A monk asked, "When one's own affair is not yet clear, what is used as verification?" The Master said, "A wooden mirror reflecting a plain face." The monk said, "What about after verification?" The Master said, "Not much difference." [A monk] asked, "The three high officials have extended an invitation, and the fourfold assembly approaches the banquet. Since you occupy the position of benevolence, please give a single song, Master." The Master said, "To sing is not difficult." The monk said, "Then please sing, Master." The Master said, "The night is still, the water clear, the fish do not bite; / The boat returns empty, loaded only with moonlight."
