23.57

虔州天竺義澄常真禪師。初參羅山棲泊數載。後因羅山在疾。師問。百年後忽有人。問和尚以何指示。羅山乃放身便倒。師從此契悟。僧問。如何是佛法大意。師曰。寒暑相催。問聖皇請命大眾臨筵。請師舉。師曰。領領。曰恁麼即人天有賴也。師曰。汝作麼生。

Chan Master Yicheng Changzhen of Tianzhu in Qianzhou initially studied under Luoshan, staying there for several years. Later, because Luoshan was ill, the Master asked, "After a hundred years, if someone suddenly asks what the Upādhyāya instructs with, what should I say?" Luoshan simply let his body go and fell over. From this, the Master attained awakening. A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Cold and heat urge each other on." [A monk] asked, "The sacred emperor requests the command, and the great assembly approaches the banquet. Please, Master, bring it up." The Master said, "Understood, understood!" The monk said, "If so, then humans and devas have someone to rely on." The Master said, "What do you say?"
