23.59

婺州金柱義昭和尚。僧問。如何是和尚家風。師曰。開門作活。僧云。忽遇賊來又怎麼生。師曰然。有新到僧參。師揭簾以手作除帽子勢。僧擬欲近前。師云。賺殺人。師因事而有頌曰。

Upādhyāya Yizhao of Jinzhu in Wuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Opening the door to make a living." The monk said, "If a thief suddenly arrives, what then?" The Master said, "Right!" A newly arrived monk came to pay respects; the Master lifted the curtain and made the gesture of taking off his hat with his hand. The monk intended to step forward. The Master said, "Deceiving people to death!" The Master, prompted by events, had a gāthā, saying:
