23.58

吉州清平惟曠真寂禪師。師上堂云。不動神情便有輸贏之意。還有麼出來。時有僧出禮拜。師云。不是作家出去。僧問。如何是第一句。師曰。要頭將取去。問如何是活人劍。師曰。會麼。曰如何是殺人刀。師叱之。問如何是師子兒。師曰。毛頭排宇宙。

Chan Master Weikuang Zhenji of Qingping in Jizhou ascended the hall and said, "Without stirring spirit or emotion, there is already the sense of winning and losing. Is there anyone? Come out!" At that time a monk came forward to bow. The Master said, "Not an expert; get out!" A monk asked, "What is the first phrase?" The Master said, "If you want my head, take it!" [A monk] asked, "What is the sword that gives life to people?" The Master said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "What is the blade that kills people?" The Master scolded him. [A monk] asked, "What is a lion's cub?" The Master said, "The tip of its hair lines up the cosmos."
