Chan Master Cang of Nantai Monastery on Mount Heng. [A monk] asked, “Having come from afar to take refuge in the Master, please, Master, receive me.” The Master said, “I do not bar the door.” The monk asked, “What is the environment of Nantai?” The Master said, “When the pine's melody brushes past, the rocks do not nod; below the solitary peak, the ramparts are hard to level.” The monk asked, “What is the person within the environment?” The Master said, “Planting wild fruit trees in front of the cliff to entertain visiting guests.” The monk said, “If so, then I thank you for the offering.” The Master said, “What is its flavor?” The monk asked, “What is the Dharma hall?” The Master said, “No walls.” The monk asked, “What is it like when one does not look to conditions?” The Master remained silent for a long time.
