幽州潭柘水從實禪師。僧問。如何是道。師曰。箇中無紫皁。曰如何是禪。師曰。不與白雲連。師問僧。作什麼來。曰親近來。師曰。任汝白雲朝嶽頂。爭奈青霄不展顏。

Chan Master Congshi of Tanzhe Stream in Youzhou. A monk asked, “What is the Way?” The Master said, “Within it, there is neither purple nor black.” The monk asked, “What is Chan?” The Master said, “It does not connect with white clouds.” The Master asked a monk, “What have you come to do?” The monk said, “I have come to draw near.” The Master said, “You may let the white clouds face the mountain peak, yet what can be done when the clear blue sky does not break into a smile?”
