Great Master Minghui Zongxian of Bao'en Cloister in Quanzhou first resided at Xingguo. A monk asked, "The single stream of Xinfeng flows branch-like to Xingguo; the ancestral lineage came from the West—please, Master, raise and proclaim it." The Master said, "I too obtained a little bit at Xinfeng." The monk asked, "Then the Dharma rain pours down and all living beings have something to rely on?" The Master said, "No idle chatter." [The monk] asked, "Formerly at the assembly on Vulture Peak, Kāśyapa personally heard it; I wonder who is the hearer today?" The Master said, "I remember the Honoured One inside the Seven-Leaf Cave." [The monk] asked, "Formerly at the eastern edge of the City of Awakening, the Elephant King turned back and the five assemblies all arrived. Today the Prefect arrives at the cloister; how do you guide and receive him?" The Master said, "Blink your eyebrows." [The monk] said, "If so, then where the single dynamic manifests, all conditions are completely shed." The Master said, "Why need cumbersome words?" [The monk] asked, "What is the meaning of coming from the West?" The Master said, "Looking at kite feathers in the sunlight." Later the Master resided at Bao'en. A monk asked, "This student presents a single question; please speak, Master." The Master said, "Were I not newly residing here, such a monk would also be hard to tolerate." [The monk] asked, "Departing from the four propositions and cutting off the hundred negations—please speak, Master." The Master said, "Blue and red flowers fill the courtyard." [The monk] asked, "Not involving thinking, please speak directly of the ancestral vehicle from of old, Master." The Master remained silent for a long while. The monk said, "If so, those who merely listen to echoes turn their ears in vain." The Master said, "Already it is sticky and glued." [The monk] asked, "Without dwelling on what came before, please speak directly the single phrase prior to sound, Master." The Master said, "Where do you come from?" [The monk] said, "If so, then I have met a clear master." The Master said, "No idle chatter." [The monk] asked, "What is a human king?" The Master said, "Facing [him], I dare not act rashly." [The monk] said, "What is a Dharma king?" The Master said, "Do not let him down, and that will be good." [The monk] said, "I wonder what the human king and the Dharma king discuss when facing each other?" The Master said, "It is not for you to hear."
