When the prefect read it, he deliberated with his subordinates, saying: "In a sandalwood grove there are surely no miscellaneous trees." The Master's cloister alone was granted a special memorial exempting it from the scripture examinations. In the ninth year of the Taiping Xingguo era, Zhang Nanjin, military administrator of Nankang, first prepared a petition to inform the Master, and then gathered monastics and laypeople to welcome him to occupy the seat of Guizong Bodhimanda. A monk asked: "What is the environment of Guizong?" The Master said: "A thousand crooked things are not as good as one straight." The monk asked: "What is the Buddha?" The Master said: "Wait until the snow has melted, and naturally spring will arrive." The monk asked: "What is the practitioner's self?" The Master said: "When the bed is narrow, lie down first; when the gruel is thin, sit down later." The monk asked: "An ancient said, 'It is not the wind moving, nor is it the banner moving.' How is this?" The Master said: "Tomorrow at the crossroads there will be a market." On the twenty-eighth day of the eleventh month in the second year of the Yongxi era, in the middle of the night, the Master sat cross-legged, addressed the assembly, and passed away in peace. He was fifty-six years old, with thirty-seven years in the monastic order. His cremated relics were enshrined in a stupa at the site of Niushou Hermitage. Quite a few songs and verses by the Master circulated in the world.
