The later Upādhyāya Baiyun of Shaozhou, when first opening the hall and ascending the seat, said to the assembly: "I wonder: the tradition of the school from above allows no lingering thought. Yet mindful of the respectful bows made at the initial mind of all Buddhas, in succession for later generations there must be skillful means, so that after thirty years it will not be buried and lost. If one is an eminent worthy or a superior gentleman, one is not among their rank. To beginners and learners of the initial mind, I show you an entrance: look above the heads of the great assembly! If you still do not understand, listen to the entanglements." The Master paused for a long time and said further: "From the Buddhas above down to sentient beings below, all share the one true mind. But which one is everyone's mind? Could it be that the sentient and the insentient share the same substance? How is such a view any different from that in a three-family village? Since it cannot be like this, how do you understand it? If you understand it directly, that is already putting yourself at a disadvantage. If we go by the gate of the ancestral masters, how could such steps be set up? A twitch of the eyebrow is already missing it, let alone grasping it before sound or matching faculties after the phrase! Is there any who understands the tune in this assembly? Cast away your travel hats and umbrellas, and please meet across the cut-off stream!" At that time a monk bowed. The Master said: "Splendid! The trampling of dragons and elephants brings boundless moisture; the three vehicles and five natures are all awakened." The monk was about to question further, but the Master said: "Go!" A monk asked: "The exquisite tune of the ancient zither has ended; please, Master, play it." The Master said: "Though Boya was a master hand, those of this era who listen are rare." The monk said: "If so, then one meets Ziqi once again." The Master said: "Laughter erupts, the startled string snaps; how could one know the melody is not the same?" The monk asked: "Of old at the assembly on Vulture Peak, the Brahmā King was the host. I wonder, who is the host at Baiyun?" The Master said: "The Attendant Censor is here." The monk said: "If so, then the Dharma rain pours down and all living beings rely on it." The Master said: "Do not sell gardenia flowers here."
