Chan Master Hankuang of Lejing in Yingzhou, on the day of opening the hall, said to the assembly: "In the land of Magadha, this command was personally carried out. Cast away your travel hats and umbrellas, and please meet across the cut-off stream." A monk asked: "What is the meaning of [Bodhidharma's] coming from the West?" The Master said: "Straining the ear brings no merit." The monk asked: "What is the house style of Lejing?" The Master said: "Heaven and earth nourish people." The monk asked: "What is the environment of Lejing?" The Master said: "When having free time, we are greedy to plant bamboo; when having leisure, we never fail to plant pine." The monk asked: "If a guest suddenly arrives, with what will you entertain him?" The Master said: "Autumn fruits are ripe all over the orchard; whoever wants them may step forward and taste." The monk asked: "What about not sitting on the bodhi-seat, but going straight past to the other side?" The Master said: "Let him pass." The monk asked: "Whose tune does the Master sing? Whose tradition of the school do you inherit?" The Master said: "A brand-new world, an extraordinary heaven and earth." The monk asked: "What about one who intends to leap through the Dragon Gate?" The Master said: "Catch him below the rapids." The monk said: "The practitioner does not understand." The Master said: "Call the head attendant to come." The monk asked: "'Just attain the root, do not worry about the branches.' What is the root?" The Master said: "Do not ask others." The monk asked: "What are the branches?" The Master raised a finger. The monk asked: "What is the environment of Lejing?" The Master said: "The full, round moon is a bodhisattva's face; the palm tree before the courtyard is a yakṣa's head." A monk took his leave. The Master asked: "Where are you going?" The monk said: "Going to Darong." The Master said: "If Darong asks what teachings Lejing has had lately, how will you reply?" The monk was speechless. The Master said on his behalf: "Just say that Lejing has not approved Darong lately." When the assembly was doing communal labor to make a hedge, a monk asked: "The ancients opened various gates of skillful means. Why does the Master, on the contrary, block them?" The Master said: "Drive the stakes in firmly!"
