24.58

澧州藥山可瓊禪師（第九世住）後住江陵延壽。僧問。請師答話。師曰好。曰還當得也無。師曰。更問。僧問曰。巨嶽不曾乏寸土。師今苦口為何人。師曰。延壽也要道過。曰不申此問焉辨我師。師喝。其僧禮拜。師便打。

Chan Master Keqiong of Yaoshan in Lizhou (the ninth generation to reside there) later resided at Yanshou in Jiangling. A monk asked, "I invite the Master to answer my question." The Master said, "Good." The monk said, "Can you still live up to it or not?" The Master said, "Ask further." The monk asked, "The towering peak has never lacked an inch of earth; for whom does the Master now speak with such earnest bitterness?" The Master said, "Yanshou also must speak of fault." The monk said, "If I had not presented this question, how could I have discerned my teacher?" The Master shouted. That monk bowed. The Master then struck him.
