24.8

杭州天龍寺秀禪師（先住歲豊）師上堂謂眾曰。諸上座多少無事。十二時中在何世界安身立命。且子細點檢看。何不覓箇歇處。因什麼却與別人點檢。若恁麼去早落第二頭也。時有僧問。承師有言。恁麼去早落第二頭。學人總不恁麼上來。師如何辨白。師曰。汝却作家。曰恁麼即今日得遇於師也。師曰。汝且莫詐明頭。問承古有言。二人俱錯。未審古人意旨如何。師曰。汝何不自檢責。曰恁麼即人天有賴也。師曰。汝不妨靈利。本國署清慧大師。

Chan Master Xiu of Tianlong Monastery in Hangzhou (who had earlier resided at Suifeng) ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying: "Sthaviras, how much is there of nothing-to-do? In the twelve periods of the day, in what world do you settle your body and establish your life? Examine carefully and see. Why do you not seek a place to rest? For what reason do you instead examine other people? If you go on like this, you have already fallen into the second order." At that time, a monk asked, "Accepting the Master's words, 'If you go on like this, you have already fallen into the second order'—supposing a student comes forward without doing so at all, how does the Master distinguish him?" The Master said, "You are indeed an expert." The monk said, "If so, then today I have encountered the Master." The Master said, "For now, do not feign clarity." The monk asked, "Accepting the ancient's words, 'Both are mistaken,' I wonder what the ancient's intended meaning was?" The Master said, "Why do you not examine and blame yourself?" The monk said, "If so, then gods and humans have something to rely on." The Master said, "You are undeniably clever." The state conferred upon him the title Great Master Qinghui.
