24.85

谷隱知儼禪師登州人也。受業於本州鵲山。得法於前谷隱知靜禪師。繼踵住持玄侶臻萃。僧問。師唱誰家曲宗風嗣阿誰。師曰。白雲南傘蓋北。問如何是迦葉親聞底事。師曰。速須作却。問如何是諸佛照不著處。師曰。問遮山鬼窟作麼。曰照著後如何。師曰。咄精怪。問千山萬水如何登涉。師曰。舉步便千里萬里。曰不舉步時如何。師曰。亦千里萬里。

Chan Master Zhiyan of Guyin was a man of Dengzhou. He received his training at Mount Queshan in his native prefecture, and obtained the Dharma from the former Chan Master Zhijing of Guyin. Succeeding him as abbot, mysterious companions gathered like clouds. A monk asked, "Whose song does the Master sing? Whose house style do you inherit?" The Master said, "South of White Cloud, north of Parasol Peak." The monk asked, "What is the matter that Kāśyapa heard in person?" The Master said, "Quickly finish it!" The monk asked, "What is the place that all Buddhas cannot illuminate?" The Master said, "Why do you ask about this mountain ghost cave?" The monk said, "What about after it is illuminated?" The Master said, "Bah, you goblin!" The monk asked, "How to traverse a thousand mountains and ten thousand rivers?" The Master said, "Lifting a foot, it is immediately a thousand miles, ten thousand miles." The monk said, "What about when not lifting a foot?" The Master said, "Also a thousand miles, ten thousand miles."
