Chan Master Congxian of Guanyin Cloister in Hongzhou was a native of Putian in Quanzhou. In his youth, he left household life at Mount Shiti in his native district and received the full precepts. He studied with Fayan and received his prediction. At first he resided at Miaoguo Cloister in Shengzhou, and later resided at this cloister, where those coming to study were quite numerous. The master ascended the hall, and the assembly gathered. After a long silence, he addressed them, saying: "Mañjuśrī deeply praised the upāsaka. I wonder whether the upāsaka accepted the praise or not? If he accepted the praise, where is the upāsaka? If he did not accept the praise, Mañjuśrī would not have spoken in vain. How does the great assembly understand this? If you understand, you are truly a patch-robed monk." Then a monk asked, "The upāsaka remained silent and Mañjuśrī deeply praised him; what is the meaning of this?" The master said, "You ask, I answer." The monk asked, "When such a person steps forward, how is it again?" The master said, "'Walking to the place where the waters end, sitting and watching when the clouds arise.'" A monk asked, "What is the house style of Guanyin?" The master said, "Look before your eyes." The monk asked, "If you suddenly encounter an adept arriving, how will you treat him?" The master said, "A poor family is just like this; it does not necessarily mean returning home." A monk asked, "Having long carried the stringless lute, I ask the Master to play a tune." The master said, "How will you listen?" The monk tilted his ear. The master said, "You fool yourself to death." The master addressed the assembly, saying: "When Postulant Lu was on top of the Dayu Ridge at that time, he said to Sthavira Ming, 'Do not think of good, do not think of evil; return to me Sthavira Ming's original face!' Today, Guanyin does not speak like that. Return Sthavira Ming to me! Speaking like that, is he a descendant of Caoxi? If he is a descendant of Caoxi, how could he eliminate four characters? If he is not, where does the fault lie? Try coming forward to discuss it." After a long silence, the master said again: "This assembly consists of true pilgrims. Take care." In the ninth month of the eighth year of the Taiping Xingguo era, the master said to the dānapati, Chief Scribe Yuan: "This old monk will return to his native village in two or three days." Yuan said, "Given the Upādhyāya's venerable age, why still think of your native village?" The master said, "Returning to my native village, I plan to get good salt to eat." Yuan could not fathom his words. The next day, without illness, the master passed away while sitting, at the age of seventy-eight. Chief Scribe Yuan built a stūpa for him on Mount Xi.
