秀州羅漢院願昭禪師錢塘人也。依本部西山保清院受業。自靈隱發明眾請出世。師上堂曰。山河大地是真善知識。時常說法時時度人。不妨諸上座參請。無事久立。僧問。羅漢家風請師一句。師曰。嘉禾合穗。上國傳芳。曰此猶是嘉禾家風。如何是羅漢家風。師曰。或到諸方分明舉似。師後住杭州香嚴寺。僧問。不立纖塵請師直道。師曰。眾人笑汝。曰如何領會。師曰。還我話頭來。

Chan Master Yuanzhao of Luohan Cloister in Xiuzhou was a native of Qiantang. He followed Baoqing Cloister on the West Mountain in his home commandery to receive his ordination and training. Having become enlightened under Lingyin, the assembly invited him to appear in the world. The Master ascended the hall and said, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth are true kalyāṇamitras. They always preach the Dharma and constantly liberate people. It does not hinder the sthaviras from inquiring and studying. You have been standing for a long time with nothing to do." A monk asked, "Please give a phrase on the house style of Luohan." The Master said, "Fine grain joins its ears; the superior country spreads its fragrance." [The monk] said, "This is still the house style of Jiahe; what is the house style of Luohan?" The Master said, "When you arrive in various places, report it clearly." Later, the Master resided at Xiangyan Temple in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "Not establishing a single speck of dust—please, Master, speak directly." The Master said, "The people will laugh at you." [The monk] said, "How should I understand it?" The Master said, "Give me back my topic of talk!"
