Chan Master Yuanqi of Mount Yandang in Wenzhou was a native of Qiantang. His family name was Jiang. In his youth, he went forth and received full ordination under Chan Master Shaoyan of Shuixin Temple. At first, he studied the teachings of Zhizhe and thoroughly investigated the practice-gate of the perfect integration of calming and contemplation. Later, he visited the Tiantai National Preceptor and clarified the profound mysteries; he then resided on Mount Yandang. In the fifth year of the Kaibao era, the eldest son of the King of Wuyue built Guangqing Temple at Xiguan and invited the Master to open the Dharma and serve as abbot. Furthermore, he sought out three hundred monks of renown and practice from among the Chan assemblies below the city walls to enter the new temple together. When the Master went up to the hall, a monk asked, "The night moon radiates light; why is there no reflection in the green pool?" The Master said, "An adept playing with shadows!" The monk crossed from east to west and stood. The Master said, "Not only playing with shadows, but also terrified of your own head!" After residing there for a short time, the Master firmly declined and returned to the mountains. He passed away during the Taiping Xingguo era.
