Great Master of Dharma Transmission Xingming of Kaihua Temple in Hangzhou was a native of the same prefecture. His surname was Yu. In his youth, he went to Chan Master Zhijue on Mount Xuedou in Mingzhou to have his head shaved. When Zhijue moved to dwell at the Great Bodhimaṇḍa of Yongming, he had two thousand disciples; kings and ministers looked up to him, and the Dharma teaching flourished even more. The master returned to Yongming after receiving prediction from Tiantai, assisting his root master, and the oceanic assembly looked up to him with devotion. In the eighth year of the Kaibao era, Zhijue returned to silence, and the master then dwelled at Reneng Temple. King Zhongyi also built Dahe Temple (soon renamed Liuhe Temple; later Emperor Taizong bestowed the title Kaihua), inviting him to dwell as abbot; at both places he gathered disciples and preached the Dharma. A monk asked, "What is the skillful means flowing forth from the gate of Kaihua?" The master said, "Every day the sound of the tide is heard twice." A monk asked, "What is the inexhaustible lamp?" The master said, "I thank the ācārya for illuminating it." Emperor Taizong bestowed a purple robe and a master title. On the sixth day of the fourth month of the fourth year of the Xianping era, he manifested extinction.
