Chan Master Huiju of Longhua Temple in Hangzhou was a native of Minyue. After receiving the transmission from Tiantai, King Zhongyi of Wuyue appointed him to reside at the aforementioned monastery. When he first opened the hall and the assembly had settled, the master said: 'Coming to this point, how are the lineage vehicles handed down from above to be discussed? And how are they to be extolled? Take Śākyamuni Tathāgata's teaching of his entire lifetime, which was poured forth like water from a pitcher; an ancient worthy still said, "It is just like a dream, like talking in one's sleep." Tell me, on what principle did that ancient worthy speak thus? Do you understand? The gate of great giving is open; when has it ever been blocked? Giving birth to ordinary beings and nurturing sages, not the slightest dust is overlooked. Speak of the ordinary, and it is entirely ordinary; raise the holy, and it is entirely holy. The ordinary and the holy do not depend on each other; each is solely revered. Therefore it is said that the mountains, rivers, and the great earth preach the Dharma at all times and emit light at all times. Earth, water, fire, and wind are every one of them like this.' At that time, a monk came forward and bowed. The master said: 'A fine question—bring it forth according to the Dharma!' The monk had just stepped forward when the master said: 'Again, there is no connection.' The monk asked: 'When the Buddhas appear in the world, they emit light and shake the earth. What auspicious omen is there when the Upādhyāya appears in the world?' The master said: 'The topic has broken itself.' Another day, he ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying: 'Here at Longhua, it is just picking up firewood and sorting vegetables, going up and coming down, a bowl of gruel in the morning, a meal at midday, and drinking tea after sleeping. Just investigate in this manner! Take care!' A monk asked: 'The student has not yet clarified his own self; how can he distinguish the shallow from the deep?' The master said: 'Recognize your own eye.' The monk asked: 'What is one's own eye?' The master said: 'What did I say to you?'
