Chan Master Guisheng of Qianguangwang Temple in Hangzhou was a native of Taoshan in Wenzhou. His surname was Zheng. Having gone forth from household life in his youth, he made a meticulous study of the Vinaya section. Listening to the Tiantai Sentences, he settled his mind on the perfect and sudden cessation-and-contemplation. Later, reading the Śūraṅgama-sūtra, its literary principles were so grand and profound that he was unable to penetrate and understand them. One evening, having chanted the sūtra for a long time, he leaned against his desk. While dozing, he saw in a dream the sun disc descend from the sky; he opened his mouth and swallowed it. From this he was suddenly awakened, and the gates of differentiated meanings dissolved without obstruction. Later, hearing that the Dharma seat of Yongming in the capital city was flourishing, he went specifically to inquire and study. Yongming merely authenticated his prior understanding without offering any other pointers or allegories; he then bestowed upon him the patchwork robe presented by King Zhongyi as a token of trust. Later, [Guisheng] resided at the Yanjing Cloister west of the lake. In the third year of the Kaibao era, the Prefect of Quzhou, Weng Sheng, held the Master's way in high esteem, whereupon he opened up the West Mountain and founded a great Chan monastery. Emperor Taizong changed and bestowed the temple plaque as Baoyun Temple, inviting the Master to dwell there. Students gathered like clouds. The Master ascended the hall and said, "Sthaviras, the Buddhadharma has nothing to do. The sun and moon of the past are the sun and moon of today. The wind of the past is the wind of today. The sthaviras of the past are the sthaviras of today. Do not say that bringing it up is finishing it or that speaking of it is finishing it. Everything is fully manifest. Take care!" In the fifth year of Kaibao, the renshen year, in the seventh month, the Master showed illness and sought no physician. Three days prior, jeweled trees and a bathing pool appeared. The Master said, "All that has marks is unreal and false." On the twenty-seventh day at the hour of late afternoon, he gathered the assembly, spoke words of farewell, and passed away sitting peacefully. His age was sixty-seven. After the cremation, his disciples collected the relics and erected a pagoda.
