Great Master Zhicheng of Zhenjing in Quzhou. A monk asked, "What is the sword that settles heaven and earth?" The Master said, "It does not leak a single silk thread or hair." [The monk] said, "What about the one who uses it?" The Master said, "I do not know." [The monk] asked, "If, while engaged in communal labor, one harms toads or earthworms with a hoe, is there any guilt or not?" The Master said, "Who is the one striking the blow?" [The monk] said, "In that case, there is no transgression." The Master said, "Cause and effect are clearly distinct." Later, the Master moved to reside at Baoyun Temple on the West Mountain of Hangzhou to preach the Dharma. The local state bestowed upon him the purple robe and titled him Great Master Jishan.
