Lord Fayun of Wanhui was a native of Wenxiang in Guo Prefecture. His surname was Zhang. He was born on the fifth day of the fifth month of the sixth year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang. In his youth, he wandered about whistling and chanting like a madman, incomprehensible to his fellow villagers. One day, he instructed his family to sweep and clean, saying, "An eminent guest is arriving." That day, the Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang returned from the Western countries and came to visit him. When the lord inquired about the customs and scenery of India, it was clearly as though he had seen them. Xuanzang made prostrations, circumambulated him, and praised him as a bodhisattva. He had an elder brother, Wannian, who had long been on military expedition in the Liaodong region; his mother, Madame Cheng, pined for news of him. The lord said, "This is quite easy." Thereupon he bade farewell to his mother and departed, returning by evening. When he delivered the letter, the neighbors were astonished. There was the śramaṇa Daming of Longxing Temple, with whom he had been close since youth. The lord frequently visited Master Ming's room. It happened that the Imperial Diarising Remonstrator Ming Chongyan passed by the temple at night and saw divine soldiers standing guard around the lord; Chongyan was terrified. At dawn, he related this to Master Ming, presented a lavish donation of gold and silk, bowed, and departed. In the fourth year of the Xianheng era, Gaozong summoned him to the inner palace. At that time there was a monk from Fufeng named Menghong, who showed many miraculous signs. He had entered the palace first and used to say, "Wanhui comes, Wanhui comes." When the lord arrived, he also said, "My replacement has arrived; I must go." Within ten days, Menghong passed away. On the eighth day of the twelfth month, the xinhai year, the second year of the Jingyun era, the master died in Liquan Lane in Chang'an, aged eighty. At that time, an extraordinary fragrance permeated the air, and his whole body remained soft. An imperial decree bestowed the posthumous title of Minister of Education and Duke of the State of Guo, with funeral expenses provided by officials. On the fifteenth day of the first month of the third year, he was buried at Xiangji Temple west of the capital.
