Two monks lived in hermitages and usually visited each other. By chance they had not met for ten days. One day, they met upon walking up the mountain. The hermit of the upper hermitage asked, "We haven't seen each other for a long time; where have you been?" The hermit of the lower hermitage said, "I have just been in the hermitage building a seamless pagoda." The upper hermit said, "I too wish to build a seamless pagoda; I would like to borrow the design from you." The lower hermit said, "Why didn't you speak up sooner? It has just been borrowed away by someone else." (Fayan cited this and said, "Tell me, did he lend him the design or did he not lend him the design?") An old woman sent someone with money to ask a senior master to turn the canon of sūtras. The senior master accepted the donation, stepped down from the meditation platform, walked around it once, and said, "Send word to the old woman: the canon of sūtras has been turned." The messenger returned and recounted this to the woman. The woman said, "I originally asked for the whole canon to be turned; why did he turn only half of it?" (Xuanjue interrogated, "Where was the place where half the canon was lacking? And tell me, what kind of eye did that old woman possess to speak like that?") A senior master sent someone to convey a message to Zen Master Sida: "Why do you not come down from the mountain to transform sentient beings? What are you doing gazing into the clouds?" Sida said, "The Buddhas of the three periods have been swallowed whole by me in one gulp. What further sentient beings are there to transform?" (Xuanjue interrogated, "Tell me, is this the talk of the mountaintop or the talk from below the mountain?") Mountain Master Xiu of Longji asked Cuiyan, "The four Gandharva kings played music as an offering to the World-Honoured One, causing Mount Sumeru to shake, the great ocean to churn waves, Kāśyapa to dance, the bodhisattvas to attain patience and remain unmoved, and the śrāvakas to be distressed. Just what was Kāśyapa's intention in dancing?" Cuiyan replied, "In a past life Kāśyapa had been a musician; his habitual tendencies have not yet been severed." The mountain master said, "Could it be that Mount Sumeru and the great ocean also have habitual tendencies not yet severed?" Cuiyan had no reply. (Fayan gave the substitution: "Precisely habitual tendencies.")
