南泉和尚遷化。陸亘大夫來慰院主問。大夫何不哭先師。大夫曰。院主道得亘即哭。無對（歸宗柔代云。哭哭）。

When Upādhyāya Nanquan passed away, Grand Master Lu Gen came to offer condolences. The temple prior asked, "Why does the Grand Master not weep for the late master?" The Grand Master said, "If the temple prior can utter a word, I will weep." The prior had no reply. (Guizong Rou gave the substitution: "Weep! Weep!")
