27.53

有一行者隨法師入佛殿。行者向佛而唾。法師曰。行者少去就何以唾佛。行者曰。將無佛處來與某甲唾。無對（溈山云。仁者却不仁者。不仁者却仁者。仰山代法師云。但唾行者。又云。行者若有語即向伊道。還我無行者處來）。

A postulant accompanied a Dharma master into the Buddha hall. The postulant spat toward the Buddha. The Dharma master said, "You have so little decorum, postulant—why do you spit at the Buddha?" The postulant said, "Bring me a place where there is no Buddha, and I will spit there." The master had no reply. (Guishan said, "The humane one turns out not to be humane; the inhumane one turns out to be humane." Yangshan substituted for the Dharma master, saying: "Just spit at the postulant." He also said, "If the postulant says anything, then say to him: 'Bring me a place where there is no postulant!'")
