Upādhyāya Jinniu of Zhenzhou: The master cooked rice himself to make offerings to the monks. Whenever it was mealtime, he carried the rice bucket to the front of the hall, danced, and said, "Children of the Bodhisattva, come eat rice!" Then he clapped his hands and laughed heartily. He did this every single day. (A monk asked Changqing, "The ancient clapped his hands and called the monks to eat rice; what was the meaning?" Changqing said, "It is much like celebrating and rejoicing over a meal." A monk asked Daguang, "I wonder what was celebrated?" Daguang danced. The monk then bowed. Daguang said, "This wild fox spirit!" Dongchan Qi said, "The ancient cooked the rice with his own hands, danced, and called people to come and eat; what was his intention? Do you understand? Take Changqing and Daguang: were they clarifying the ancient's intention, or analyzing it separately for him? Now I ask you, sthaviras: every day when you hold the bowl and grasp the alms bowl, when you welcome and send off, is it the same as the ancient, or is there another principle? If you say it is different, how does it become different? If it is the same, as soon as it comes to his dancing, you are again called a wild fox spirit. Do you have an understanding? If you do not yet understand, where are your eyes for traveling on foot?" A monk asked Caoshan, "When the ancient acted like that, was he a servant boy or maidservant?" Caoshan said, "Yes." The monk said, "Please speak of the transcendental matter, Master." Caoshan scolded him, saying, "This servant boy and maidservant!")
