The upādhyāya of Fubei: An old laywoman named Ling came to pay homage to the Master. The Master offered her a seat and drank tea with her. The old woman then asked, "To whom do you entrust the phrase that cannot be spoken even with all one's might?" The Master said, "Fubei has no leftover words." The old woman said, "I do not speak like that." The Master then brought up the previous words and asked the old woman. The old woman folded her hands and wept, saying, "Blue Heaven, amidst it there is yet more bitter grievance!" The Master was speechless. The old woman said, "Not knowing the biased and the upright in speech, not recognizing the inverted and the perverse in principle—acting as a guide for others only brings disaster." Later, a monk related this to Nanquan. Nanquan said, "How miserable for Fubei to be broken by an old woman!" When the old woman heard that Nanquan had said this, she laughed and said, "Old Master Wang still lacks the mechanism." There was a Chan traveler from Youzhou named Chengyi who met the old woman and asked, "Why did Nanquan say that, and how does he still lack the mechanism?" The old woman wept and said, "How lamentable, how painful!" The Chan traveler was at a loss. The old woman then asked, "Do you understand?" The Chan traveler joined his palms and withdrew. The old woman said, "Standing-dead Chan monks are as plentiful as hemp and millet!" Later, the Chan traveler Chengyi related this to Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou said, "If I saw that stinking old woman, I would question her until she was struck dumb." Chengyi asked Zhaozhou, "I wonder how the Venerable would question her?" Zhaozhou struck him with his staff, saying, "Like this standing-dead fellow—if I don't hit him now, what am I waiting for?" and struck him several times in succession. When the old woman heard that Zhaozhou had said this, she said, "Zhaozhou himself deserves to receive the staff in this old woman's hand." Later, a monk related this to Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou wept and said, "How lamentable, how painful!" When the old woman heard these words of Zhaozhou, she joined her palms and praised him, saying, "Zhaozhou's eye radiates light, illuminating and breaking through the four continents!" Later, Zhaozhou instructed a monk to go and ask the old woman, "What is Zhaozhou's eye like?" The old woman then held up her fist. Hearing of this, Zhaozhou composed a verse to send to the old laywoman Ling:
