Chan Master Xingkong of Mount Shishuang in Tanzhou: A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master said, "If a person is down in a thousand-foot well, without using an inch of rope, get this person out, and I will answer you on the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West." The monk said, "Recently in Hunan, Upādhyāya Chang appeared in the world and also rambled on about this and that for people." The master called a novice: "Drag this dead corpse out!" (The novice was Yangshan.) Later, the novice brought this up to Danyuan and asked, "How does one get the person out of the well?" Danyuan said, "Bah! You fool, who is in the well?" Later, he asked Guishan, "How does one get the person out of the well?" Guishan called out, "Huiji!" Ji answered, "Yes?" Guishan said, "He is out!" When he later resided at Mount Yang, he once cited these earlier words and told the assembly, "At Danyuan's place I attained the name; at Guishan's place I attained the ground."
