Chan Master Canshou of Datong Cloister on Mount Qiyan in Hezhong Prefecture was a person of unknown origin, with the surname Mei. At first he lectured on sūtras and treatises, and later entered the room of Shishuang. Adapting to conditions, he guided and transformed people, arriving at Puban, where monastics and laypeople turned their hearts to him. A monk asked, "How is it before the lotus flower emerges from the water?" The Master said, "Might you be asking about the matter of the lotus flower after it emerges from the water?" The monk was speechless. In daily life the Master rarely spoke, but whenever struck, he responded. He liberated four hundred disciples and a hundred nuns. He lived to the age of ninety-three, and was posthumously titled Great Master Zhenji.
