Upādhyāya Nanyuan of the Western Capital Luoyang. [A monk] asked, 'What is: "no dharma is born"?' The master said, 'They are born!' There was a Confucian scholar who had read widely in ancient and modern literature; people of the time called him Zhang Baihui [Master of a Hundred Understandings]. One day he came to visit the master. The master said, 'Could you be Zhang Baihui?' He said, 'I would not dare [claim so].' The master drew a line in the air with his hand and said, 'Do you understand?' He said, 'I do not understand.' The master said, 'You do not even understand one; where do you get a hundred understandings?'
