Chan Master Feng of Gushan in Tanzhou (who also resided at Putong Cloister in Xingyuan Prefecture). A monk asked, “Whose song does the master sing? Whose tradition of the school do you succeed?”
The master said, “Plum blossoms bloom on the snowy peak; the old monk in the cloudy cave is startled.”
The master went up to the hall and instructed the assembly, saying, “A swift horse is outstanding before the spur; the wanderer carries [a talisman] suspended behind his elbow. Since you have studied with a guest beyond the clouds, test it out for this old monk to see.”
Just as a monk stepped forward, the master struck him and said, “Why didn’t you stick your head out earlier?”
