Upādhyāya Jingyuan of Dengfeng in Shaozhou. The master went up to the hall and addressed the assembly, saying, “The ancients said: ‘Mountains, rivers, and the great earth are all true thusness.’ Great assembly, if you attain true thusness, then hide the mountains, rivers, and the great earth! If you do not attain it, you go against the supreme words of those ancient worthies! Anyone in the assembly who can speak, come forth! If you cannot speak, then return each to your hall. Take care!”
A monk asked, “What is the master’s phrase for helping people?”
The master said, “Not exerting effort.”
