Chan Master Shao'an, [known as] Tongbian Mingda, of Bao'en Guangjiao Monastery in Hangzhou (the fourth generation to reside [there]). The Master went up to the hall and said, "One phrase that imbues the spirit does not decay for myriad kalpas. Today I cite one phrase for you sthaviras. Remember it clearly! Take care!" A monk asked, "The great assembly listens attentively; please, Master, do not be sparing." The Master said, "Extraordinary!" [The monk] said, "If so, then today I have encountered the Master." The Master said, "What kind of talk is that?" The Master at times instructed the assembly, saying, "Fortunately, there are pavilions encompassing the earth, constantly upholding the ancestral seal. There is no harm in you sthaviras investigating [this]. You have been standing long. Take care!" [A monk] asked, "What is the upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Completely ready and manifest in all places." [The monk] said, "If so, then it spans from antiquity to the present." The Master said, "Do not engage in idle talk."
