27.91

Upādhyāya Xuanjue heard the call of a turtle dove and asked a monk, "What sound is that?" The monk said, "A turtle dove." The Master said, "If you wish not to incur karma for the Avīci Hell, do not slander the Tathāgata's wheel of the True Dharma." (Dongshan Qi said, "The sthavira said it was the sound of a turtle dove, and immediately it became slandering the Dharma. Where is the slandering? If one says it is not, would that do? Sthavira, tell me: what was Xuanjue's meaning?")
