Once [Dao]yi received awakening, his mind and thoughts soared beyond. He attended [Huairang] for ten autumns, his understanding growing more profound day by day. The Master had six disciples admitted to his inner room in total. The Master verified and acknowledged each, saying: "You six persons simultaneously realize my body, each according with one aspect. One person has obtained my eyebrows, skilled in majestic demeanour (Changhao). One person has obtained my eyes, skilled in watchful gaze (Zhida). One person has obtained my ears, skilled in listening to the principle (Tanran). One person has obtained my nose, skilled in knowing scents (Shenzhao). One person has obtained my tongue, skilled in discourse (Yanjun). One person has obtained my mind, skilled in past and present (Daoyi)." He further said: "All dharmas are produced from the mind. Where the mind has nothing to produce, dharmas have nowhere to abide. If one penetrates the mind-ground, whatever one does is without obstruction. Unless meeting those of superior faculties, you should be prudent in your speech!" There was a venerable elder who asked: "When a bronze mirror is cast into an image, after the image is completed, where does the brightness of the mirror go?" The Master said: "Where are the venerable elder's bodily marks from the time you were a child?" (Fayan offered an alternate remark: "Which one is the image that the venerable elder was cast into?") [The elder] asked: "Just so, after the image is completed, why does it not reflect and illuminate?" The Master said: "Although it does not reflect and illuminate, you cannot deceive it in the slightest." Later, Great Master Ma [Daoyi] propagated the transformation in Jiangxi. The Master asked the assembly: "Is Daoyi preaching the Dharma for the assembly?" The assembly said: "He has already been preaching the Dharma for the assembly." The Master said: "Yet I have never seen anyone bring any news of this." The assembly made no reply, so he sent a monk, saying: "Wait until he takes the high seat, then merely ask, 'How is it?' Remember the words he speaks and bring them back." The monk went, fully carrying out the Master's instructions. Upon returning, he said to the Master: "Master Ma said: 'Ever since the disturbances of thirty years ago, I have never lacked for eating salt and sauce.'" The Master approved of this. On the eleventh day of the eighth month in the third year of Tianbao, he passed into nirvana at Mount Heng. By imperial decree, he was posthumously granted the title Zen Master Dahui, and his stūpa was named Zuishenglun (Supremely Victorious Wheel).
