Chan Master Ying of Kaiyuan in Jianzhou ascended the hall and said, "There is a mirror hanging everywhere; neither ordinary nor sage comes, so who is superior and who is inferior?" He then picked up his staff and said, "This is the staff; which is the mirror?" After a long pause, he said, "The moon in the realm of space over the eternal green pool: / Only after repeated dredging will you come to know it." He also said, "Flickering and darting, surging in the east and sinking in the west; unharmed and uninjured, piercing the skin and penetrating the bone. Its equal function is neither mind nor Buddha. Squeezing open your face—what is this thing? The ancients without reason called it an osprey soaring into the distant sky. Those without eyes, look closely! Alas, alas, alas!" Striking the meditation couch with his whisk, he stepped down from the seat.
