Hermitage Master Zhengyan of Mituo in Wenzhou. One day he paid homage to Chan Master Liang of Xuedou. Liang asked, "Are you a novice with a master or a novice without a master?" The Master said, "Setting aside having or not having, is the Upādhyāya a Chan master with a master or a Chan master without a master?" Liang said, "Instead, the gourd vine is wound backward around the gourd." The Master said, "What did you say?" Liang was about to reply when the Master flicked his sleeves and went straight out, saying, "Seeing your face is not as good as hearing your name." Liang laughed heartily. That evening [the Master] entered the abbot's room, but Liang did not give approval. The Master then composed a verse: / 'The golden knife shaved off the dark silk hair; / Seeking Buddha, seeking Dharma, also seeking the true. / Huangmei entrusted it to Postulant Lu; / To whom does the Master now extend his hand?'"
